Own Words

I was born and raised in Queens, NY, and my idea of Korea was a place frozen in time from the 1960s, which was when my parents took the slow boat from Pusan to Buenos Aires, then onwards to JFK.

I spent the better half of my life mistaking empanadas for super-sized, deep-fried mandoo. The Korea in my mind was straw-thatched houses and halmoni kimchi-squatting over a bucket while hand-feeding you various pickled root vegetables.

How delusional of me. I got to Seoul, surrounded by all the neon and noraebangs, and my first thought was, "Hot damn. It looks just like Flushing."

I came to Korea on a Fulbright research grant and am now teaching graduate-level writing at Ewha University. I'm also at work on a collection of essays that range from performing a cost-benefit analysis of a bagel with cream cheese to exploring "jung" in North Korea.

I muse on the "motherland" and debunk other Korean-American myths on my blog: newyorkerinseoul.com.
